Dr. Pernica’s main interest is in the diagnosis and management of respiratory and enteric infections in children. He is currently conducting a clinical trial in Botswana investigating whether rapid test-and-treat algorithms and/or probiotic treatment of children with severe gastroenteritis is associated with improved growth, decreased diarrhoea recurrence, and more ‘healthy’ intestinal microbiota. He is also running clinical trials in Canada exploring whether minimization of antibiotic exposure for children with community-acquired pneumonia and otitis media is associated with less antimicrobial resistance and less disruption of the intestinal microbiome.
