Dr. Poinar is an evolutionary geneticist with a particular interest in the population dynamics of infectious agents through time. His team uses novel molecular genetic techniques to capture and interrogate sequence data from ancient and contemporary strains to better understand the drivers of evolution. Thier work is of particular importance and relevance to rapidly evolving (and moving) antimicrobial gene clusters.
