McArthur’s Joint ‘ARETE’ Project Selected in Genome Canada Competition

McArthur Lab Masters student Martins Oloni will be collaborating with the Public Health Agency of Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and Dalhousie University on this project.

Congratulations to Dr. Andrew McArthur’s research team on their successful Genome Canada Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (B/CB) Competition project “Antimicrobial Resistance: Emergence, Transmission, and Ecology (ARETE)”.

The joint project, led by Dalhousie University’s Dr. Rob Beiko and Simon Fraser University’s Dr. Fiona Brinkman, was selected as one of 37 projects to be supported by Genome Canada as a result of three funding competitions.

The purpose of ARETE is to better understand antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by identifying which genes contribute to resistance and analyzing how they spread in the environment.

Specifically, new McArthur Lab Masters student Martins Oloni will be collaborating with the Public Health Agency of Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and Dalhousie University on making their Comprehensive Antibiotic Resistance Database stronger for mobile elements involved in drug resistance in agricultural settings.
