Inappropriate antibiotic use is a serious problem in the treatment of respiratory tract infections because in the majority of cases the causative organism is not detected. This can be due to the limitations of current diagnostics or because infections are caused by atypical pathogens or polymicrobial infections. The Surette lab studies pathogen-microbiome interactions in respiratory infections in order to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
